Three different jobs, usually confused
"Wrapping" covers materials that do quite different things, and most disagreements start because two people mean different things by the word.
- Blocking wind. Moving air strips heat from a hive far faster than still cold air does. Almost any wrap does this, and on an exposed site it may be the main benefit.
- Absorbing sunlight. A dark wrap warms the box on a clear day. Tar paper and black corrugated plastic are chosen partly for this.
- Adding insulation. Genuinely slowing heat loss needs thickness. Tar paper and a thin plastic sleeve add very little. Foam board, a purpose-made insulated jacket or a filled quilt add a lot.
A single sheet of roofing felt is doing the first two jobs and barely the third. If someone tells you wrapping made no difference, and someone else says it transformed their survival, they may simply have wrapped with different materials.
Where it clearly earns its place
Wrapping is standard commercial practice across the Canadian prairies and much of the northern US, and the Ontario Beekeepers' Association has run a group buy on polypropylene wraps since 2007, with the proceeds funding their Tech-Transfer research programme. That is a reasonable signal: in a genuinely hard winter, people whose living depends on colonies surviving choose to wrap.
In the UK, Ireland and the mild Pacific Northwest, most beekeepers do not wrap, and their colonies come through anyway. Damp is the enemy there rather than sustained deep cold, and a wrap that traps moisture makes the actual problem worse.
Where it is genuinely contested
Between those two extremes the evidence is mixed, and it is worth being honest about that rather than picking a side.
Claims that insulated colonies consume meaningfully less honey over winter are common, and some trials are cited in support. I have not read those studies and am not repeating their numbers here. Against that, experienced beekeepers report seeing no survival difference between wrapped and unwrapped colonies in the same yard, and conclude that queen age, genetics, stores and mite levels swamp the effect of the wrap. Both of those observations can be true at once, because they are measuring different things: honey consumed is not the same outcome as colonies alive in April.
The other live argument is whether extra warmth helps or hurts. One view is that a warmer hive loses less heat, so the cluster burns less fuel. The other is that a warmer hive keeps bees more active and rearing brood earlier, which burns more. There is no settled answer, and where you land probably depends on how cold your winter actually gets.
What the thermal work adds
Derek Mitchell, at the University of Leeds, has applied building heat-transfer methods to beehives. His work describes the winter cluster's outer mantle as behaving like a heat sink rather than a layer of insulation, and argues that standard thin-walled wooden hives are poor thermal homes compared with the tree cavities colonies choose for themselves.
That matters here because a lot of traditional advice quietly assumes the opposite: that bees are naturally equipped to handle a thin box and mainly need the damp let out. If the cluster is not the neat insulating blanket it is usually described as, the case for insulating the box gets stronger rather than weaker.
It is not a licence to wrap everything everywhere. It is a reason to treat "bees don't need insulation, they cluster" as an argument that has been challenged rather than a fact.
If you do wrap, get these right
- Never cover an entrance or a vent. The colony makes water all winter and it has to leave. This is the one mistake that reliably turns a wrap into a killer.
- Insulate the roof regardless. Nobody disputes this part, and it is the cheapest thing on the list. See the condensation guide for why.
- Do not wrap too early. Wait until the colony has settled and the weather has genuinely turned.
- Watch for late-winter warm spells. A dark wrap on a bright February day can warm a box enough to tempt bees out into air that will kill them.
- Take it off in spring. Once you are inspecting again, the risk flips from cold nights to a dark box cooking in the sun.
- Consider a windbreak instead. On an exposed site, a fence or a stack of pallets on the prevailing side may buy you most of the benefit for none of the moisture risk.
The honest hierarchy
If you have limited time and money this autumn, spend it in this order: get the mite count down, get the stores up, make sure there is a laying queen, insulate above the cluster, and then, if your winters justify it, wrap.
Wrapping is the most visible thing a beekeeper does in autumn and the easiest to photograph, which may be why it gets discussed more than the four things above it. None of those four are visible from the road.
